An evening of majestic football in Plymouth and a morning of
unending celebration in Lagos capped the group stage of the on-going FIFA U-20
WYC in New Zealand. It was a sight to behold as Nigeria defeat Hungary to set
up a German duel. The game started slowly with the Hungarians building up, but
the Flying Eagles found their rhythm mid-way in the first half and they were
monsters afterward, terrifying the Hungarian defence, it paid off when
Inspirational Taiwo Awoniyi broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute.
What more can you expect from the Golden Generation of 2013? It was an all
dominance encounter. After the break, Hungary came with a scary attack with a
rattled crossbar, but the defence line was cleared and danger averted, it was
to be the turn of the Flying Eagles, and this time they made no mistake,
Awoniyi was on the score sheet again after profiting from a defensive
collision, and a rounding off the goalkeeper before slotting home the second
and final goal of the encounter. However, with the results, the trio of Brazil,
Nigeria and Hungary made it pass the group phase. Brazil tops the group after
defeating Korea DPR 3-0 to set up an all South American game against Uruguay.
Nigeria will face daunting German task in the second round, after a perfect
German record saw them top the log with 9points and massive 16goals. Hungary,
despite ending third place finish, qualified as one of the four best-losers to
set up a Serbian encounter who finished first of Group D.
A moment of joy for all African contingents as Mali,
Senegale, Nigeria and Ghana all made it through to the second round, however,
the highlighting fixture will be between Mali and Ghana as both will continue from
where they stopped at the U-20 AYC with Mali running a 3-1 victory.
