Some termed him the greatest thing ever happen to Nigerian music industry in recent times, with constant hits that continued to dominate our airwaves, a record label (EME) owned by one who clearly understood the fast trend of Nigerian music, the sky was nothing but the starting point for Ayo Balogun.
Holla@ your boy, WizKid's official first hit single was released in 2010 and got so many music lovers wondering who this wonder kid is.
2011 was year made of WizKid, with the release of his classic album super star, he emphatically announced to Nigerian music industry that he has come to stay, but soon after the release of that album the euphoria of unprecedented stardom it brought, WizKid began to step on toes behind the superstar project and soon things began to go haywire.
The superstar project consisted of most songs produced by Samklef, but soon after the album became the talk of town, the star boy jilted his partnership with Samklef and sought intercourse with other producers such as Masterkraft, sarz, Maleek Berry etc.
These relationship gave birth to several hits that rocked the Nigerian airwaves but in 2012 came the big one, first it was with unbelief we took in the alleged rumored that the smooth sailing Master Protégé relationship between Banky W and WizKid had gone sour, but with the eviction of Osagie, the manager who transformed him from nothingness to stardom and with the establishment of his record label Star boy, it became obvious that these rumor were well founded.
Three years after Nigeria got stunned by his debut album wizkid on September 2014 released the most anticipated album of the year titled AYO and less than 24 hours of its release was crowned number 1 on iTunes world music category.
However the 18 track sophomore album has equally come under fire from his fans and music critics, while some view that album as a perfect work of art some have term it as an over hyped and below average album, in other words of Ayomide Tayo of Nigerian Entertainment today "WizKid simply showed that he either doesn't have what it takes to make a creative gambles for an artiste of his caliber or he is pretty much comfortable in flogging a dead horse until it has no flesh".
However it is pertinent to note that the wonder kid has failed to developel and grow at the pace most music lovers thought he would, the quality of his singles continue to take a down slide slope and his lyrics recycled as usual although some would beg to differ.
For such a highly anticipated album from one of the continent biggest popstar, the album clearly fell short of mark, it parades international collaborations that are mostly cosmetic than musical.
Star boy has got to step up and go back to the drawing board if he is to surpass his previous success and also his closest music rival Davido. In as much as I would love to agree with Dayo Showemimo of Nigeria Entertainment Today when he stated that "WizKid remains the same old WizKid we all know on this album, the style of singing is the same. There is nothing spectacular about WizKid delivery. Star boy remains one of the most talented young individual that this generation will ever witness but my one advice: LEARN MORE.
