Laënnec's Discovery

The stethoscope is one of the most recognizable tool associated with medical doctors.
Yet one would hardly believe it inventor,  René Théophile Hyacinthe Laënnec (Feb 17, 1781 ), was led to the discovery out of fear of touching a woman's chest!

My point here is: what is your fear leading you to discover? Is your fear of failing fuel enough to push you through? Or is it rejection that scares you.

Laënnec did a simple math: he cannot treat the woman without touching her chest. Since that was not an option for him, a new means of achieving the same result became necessary, and obviously, possible. What is it for you?

Indeed his discovery was way better than the traditional method of listening through the back of the patient (see: picture).

But if you are a doctor, would you forgive him?

The Right Tree In Business (PT 3)

By     No comments:
Strategy Formulation

This is a key process required in managing your business. It is the strategic process of examining your market and devising suitable mediums of attracting clients or customers. Lasting strategies can ensure resale or referral.

A strategy is what you need compete successfully and then survive. Formulating strategy is an integral process of business development as it blends with the process of ensuring the scalability of your idea. It is therefore advisable that the first template strategies be developed before establishing your business, or during the design phase of your business model.
Strategy formulation is an important part of business development as most of the processes executed throughout the lifetime of the business are developed here, or at least created here, and modified subsequently.

Follow these steps to formulate your business strategies.

1. Conduct a thorough research on all existing strategies. You can break your work into manageable bits to account for

  • Competitor’s business strategies (document them).
  • Market acceptability and reach of existing strategies.
  • Specific market benefit from each strategy.

2. Document, reform, re-model these strategies. Some strategies may not be adaptable to your business due to its location, process or market. That a strategy worked well for a competitor does not mean you will get similar result from employing them. It is important to adapt a strategy to your particular business, considering the prevailing circumstance such as staffing, market exposure of business etc.
3. Create new strategies. Your findings from the research will help you determine if new strategies will be required to win your market. Often, this is the case for new entrants to a market.

4. Define all activities to be daily done in executing these strategies. This will effectively create job descriptions or openings for your firm. You will from this know what skills you need in your business.

NB:

  • Strategy formulation may lead to product redesign and other major business management/policy adjustment. These will forge part of new formulated strategies for your business.
  • Some strategies may already be counter-productive to your competitors. You will need to know why and weather it will be consistent with your firm should your employ them also.

THE RIGHT TREE IN BUSINESS (PT 2)

While creating a business, I have discussed on the need to create an organizational direction for your business. This means establishing the groundwork, path for your business. Check here

The next thing after Organizational Direction is to conduct an Environmental Analysis. This basically means conducting a review of the existing market your business is to dwell in and testing the market to be sure of a sure shot of survival for your potential SME.

From my experience, there are two aspects to Environmental Analysis:

    1. SWOT Analysis: this is important. It means evaluating your strengths against your weaknesses (internal analysis) and the available opportunities against potential or existing threats (external analysis). Conducting your SWOT analysis will score you the following:
  • A detailed understanding of your business field, existing competitors and even potential market share.
  • Firsthand x-ray of existing or unexplored market or market strategies.
  • Better understanding of the value your product or service will deliver to the market and how much it should be priced compared to its existing competitors’
  • Determine your core strengths and weaknesses which you will need to harness to favour your endeavor.

   2. Feasibility Study: this should be carried before the business is established. It helps you determine the viability and scalability of your business idea. It also helps you determine if the business is viable, sell-able and how much it can significantly impact on the people.  Embarking on this will:

  • Help you in expunging all illusion in your business model
  • Expose you to existing strategies, wants and primary needs you may not have discovered to cater for in your business.

Your leverage would be those things you do better than your competitors (your core competencies) found in areas such as service delivery, product quality, common core values, corporate culture etc.

Environmental Analysis helps the entrepreneur get reassurances of the workability of his idea in the market. it helps the entrepreneur predetermine the best possible way to tailor your SME, business model, product packaging, delivery means and, more importantly, the best strategies to employ to exploit the markets not fully covered, or to bite from the saturated ones.

CASE STUDY
Peak Milk was the milk of choice of the people. The strongest brand in the market, it was mainly available in tins and to an elite market who could afford it at N 90. This meant a larger chuck of the market were either cut off their reach or were forced to buy the rather expensive product at the time.
When Cowbell was venturing into the market, it did a thorough environmental analysis and found that a larger share of the market was largely ignored. This called for tailoring the product to be available in packages affordable particularly to this maligned market. Needless to say the market share ignored was far larger than the one catered for by Primary Peak.
Cowbell thus targeted the very poor folks, providing satchel powdered milk for N 10, affordable to all classes of people.
This move more than grossed them N 900,000,000 annually. This forced mighty Peak to start producing satchel milk!
This move was the lifeline for Cowbell, effectively breaking them into the market with ease.

After analyzing your business environment, you get on to creating or formulating strategies.

We will discuss this soon. Stay tuned.

5 KEY MUST-DO BRANDING PROCESS FOR YOUR SME

Marketing, as much as is an art, is also a culture. This culture is what endears

the clients and creates the environment or belief of oneness with the SME in the client. Effective marketing thus makes the client committed to the product or service.
For a client to stay loyal to the SME’s product or service, careful attention must be paid to its branding and packaging as much as to its quality. It is said that packaging invites the client; quality keeps the client. Today, however, quality and packaging is hardy separated in the client’s view: the product is as good as its package.
Essentially, every SME seeks to create:
  • A striking and lasting first impressions (totally the job of packaging)
  • A friendly and acceptable blend with the taste of the potential) client
  • An identity through its texture, colour, design and shape such as it is easily identifiable as separate from its competitors.

Product packaging is branding. Branding is the bridge between your potential client and your SME. It is the aspect of business that ensures identity and niche. A product identity is craftily defined to create a lasting impression, a friendly and acceptable blend (through PR, customer service etc.), and to set it apart from its competitors in the market.
An SME with a generic (one with a general name such as Diaper Shop, Project Management Firm, Plumber’s Shop etc.) will lose market to those with more visible names. It is often a major flaw to embark on SME operations without first deciding its brand features and identity.

5 KEY MUST-DO  BRANDING PROCESS FOR YOUR SME

Branding is planned out as soon as your business idea is thought out. This is an important step for your business because it:
  • Creates a face that  becomes your SME
  • Strengthens your market and creates client loyalty.

In building a suitable brand, be aware that a poorly executed brand will be an impediment to sales for your business to stay afloat.
Among other things, below are 5 key must-do branding process.

  1. Determine its corporate name:  I recommend you search for a professional name; a name that easily links up to the specific or major business you operate. Do this as soon as you are clear on what your business is about.
  2. Determine you SME’s primary colours: this is essential for marketing purposes. Depending on your business, consider primary colours. You want your business to show market dominance and capability.
  3. Define a logo: this should be a blend between: business name, chosen colour and industry. Some popular firms have however created some lasting brands out of just coining words. Make your logo choice simple and easily recognizable. Determine the logo shape, colours, texture. There are several websites you could use to design a good logo. You can also use Coreldraw or Photoshop to do a personalized logo. With the logo design, create your complimentary cards, letterhead and identity cards.
  4. Create a suitable website with landing pages directed to your firm: secure a domain name for your business to avoid having to pay heavily for a suitable one in future.
  5.  Determine your SME business culture and Operational readiness: the focus here is what you and your team do when the clients have arrived.
