The Story: Colonel Sanders (Kentucky Fried Chicken)

At age 5 his father died.
At age 16 he quit school.
At age 17 he had already lost four jobs.
At age 18 he got married.
Between ages 18 and 22, he was a railroad conductor and failed.
He joined the army and washed out there.
He applied for law school he was rejected.
He became an insurance sales man and failed again.
At age 19 he became a father.
At age 20 his wife left him and took their baby daughter.
He became a cook and dishwasher in a small cafe.
He failed in an attempt to kidnap his own daughter, and eventually he convinced his wife to return home.
At age 65 he retired.
On the 1st day of retirement he received a check from the Government for $105.
He felt that the Government was saying that he couldn’t provide for himself.
He decided to commit suicide, it wasn’t worth living anymore; he had failed so much.
He sat under a tree writing his will, but instead, he wrote what he would have accomplished with his life. He realized there was much more that he hadn’t done. There was one thing he could do better than anyone he knew. And that was how to cook.
So he borrowed $87 against his check and bought and fried up some chicken using his recipe, and went door to door to sell them to his neighbors in Kentucky.
Remember at age 65 he was ready to commit suicide.
But at age 88 Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Empire was a billionaire.

Moral of the story:
It's never too late to start all over. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR ATTITUDE. NEVER GIVE UP NO MATTER HOW HARD IT GETS.
You have what it takes to be successful. Go for it and make a difference.

Laënnec's Discovery

The stethoscope is one of the most recognizable tool associated with medical doctors.
Yet one would hardly believe it inventor,  René Théophile Hyacinthe Laënnec (Feb 17, 1781 ), was led to the discovery out of fear of touching a woman's chest!

My point here is: what is your fear leading you to discover? Is your fear of failing fuel enough to push you through? Or is it rejection that scares you.

Laënnec did a simple math: he cannot treat the woman without touching her chest. Since that was not an option for him, a new means of achieving the same result became necessary, and obviously, possible. What is it for you?

Indeed his discovery was way better than the traditional method of listening through the back of the patient (see: picture).

But if you are a doctor, would you forgive him?

The Right Tree In Business (PT 3)

By     No comments:
Strategy Formulation

This is a key process required in managing your business. It is the strategic process of examining your market and devising suitable mediums of attracting clients or customers. Lasting strategies can ensure resale or referral.

A strategy is what you need compete successfully and then survive. Formulating strategy is an integral process of business development as it blends with the process of ensuring the scalability of your idea. It is therefore advisable that the first template strategies be developed before establishing your business, or during the design phase of your business model.
Strategy formulation is an important part of business development as most of the processes executed throughout the lifetime of the business are developed here, or at least created here, and modified subsequently.

Follow these steps to formulate your business strategies.

1. Conduct a thorough research on all existing strategies. You can break your work into manageable bits to account for

  • Competitor’s business strategies (document them).
  • Market acceptability and reach of existing strategies.
  • Specific market benefit from each strategy.

2. Document, reform, re-model these strategies. Some strategies may not be adaptable to your business due to its location, process or market. That a strategy worked well for a competitor does not mean you will get similar result from employing them. It is important to adapt a strategy to your particular business, considering the prevailing circumstance such as staffing, market exposure of business etc.
3. Create new strategies. Your findings from the research will help you determine if new strategies will be required to win your market. Often, this is the case for new entrants to a market.

4. Define all activities to be daily done in executing these strategies. This will effectively create job descriptions or openings for your firm. You will from this know what skills you need in your business.

NB:

  • Strategy formulation may lead to product redesign and other major business management/policy adjustment. These will forge part of new formulated strategies for your business.
  • Some strategies may already be counter-productive to your competitors. You will need to know why and weather it will be consistent with your firm should your employ them also.

Steps in Creating Your Product Or Business Brand

Branding is an important part of business and product management. This is more so because branding ensures the recognizable face your business may have. Creating a brand name and niche for your business, company or product is now considered a needed marketing tool in business. Brand is a necessity as a mark of quality and assurance.
Branding processes are generally a simple yet effective way of entering and securing a market. It eases on financial and even HR cost on marketing. Indeed a branded business makes marketing easier.
After determining the type of business and its market that suit your product, you will need to make conscious and deliberate efforts to create a brand or identity your business. Needless to say, by not creating a brand identity for your product or service means you are settling for the generic identity and this basically identifies all businesses or products in the same category. A painting firm will do better if it has a name and some other distinguishing factors beyond simply being identified as a ‘Paint Shop.’

Creating a brand for your business:

Define a Business name
Branding begins from the conception of your business. A business without a name is like a house without a door: you cannot access it. The influx of similar businesses makes it important to set yours apart. This is why naming your business is important. It helps you secure your clients/customers. The trick is in getting a suitable name. My suggestion is that you think on a professional name—a name easily identifiable with your line of business. This will win you about 5% of the general market, and save you the ton of time it will take a non-professional name to get recognized.
Define your business logo
A logo harnesses your business to a simple identity, such that your logo represents your business even when used alone. A matching logo is ideal, such as logos coined with letters from your brand name or from major product tools or items. A cake stand can incorporate an oven design into her logo, for instance.
Define your business colors.
Colors are identifying markers for businesses. Major businesses have generic matching colors. People are often drawn to colors such as blue and red. Bold colors are cool. Try to avoid too many color mix. Simplicity is generally better. Clear and bold colors generally appeal to more audience and potential customers.
Create your Business’s Marketing Materials
Branded marketing materials are major part of marketing success. It is important to take some time to design matching materials (fliers, banners, even internet marketing materials). Your marketing materials are the first point of customer interaction with your business. A poorly designed or printed flier will basically create a negative impression on a new client just getting to hear about your business.
Create your Business’s Management Niche
Information put on your branded materials must be consistent with your business’s operations and services delivery system. Common core values are highlighted in marketing materials. Drawn from your business strength, it is a marketing strategy identifiable with your business, on which the brand cements a lasting reminder in the minds of the customer. The business niche is an intricate process that covers operational control, customer service and product management.
Spread the Word
After ensuring your product, service system and business operations procedure are consistent with the information on your branded materials, it is important to spread the word. Distribute the (branded) materials-fliers, online designs etc. through appropriate channels to build recognition for your brand. A brand is as good as its market reach.
